Preventative Dentistry in Murrells Inlet, SC
The saying, “Prevention is the best medicine,” most certainly applies to the dental industry. Everything you can do at home to help keep your smile healthy and prevent issues should be a part of your daily routine, but what does preventive dental care really entail? At home, preventative dental care should start the moment you wake up and last through the moment you go to sleep.
Always start your day with a glass of water and the process of brushing your teeth for two minutes using a dentist recommended toothpaste and toothbrush. You should then floss your teeth thoroughly after breakfast to ensure that all food particles have been removed from between your teeth. If you have the chance to brush after your lunch, you should do that as well, but at the very least rinse your mouth out with water and floss if you can.
Before bed, you should brush your teeth for two minutes again and floss one final time. You may also use an alcohol-free (non-drying) mouthwash to kill off bacteria. Read the directions on the bottle because some are suggested once a day while others are recommended for use twice daily.
In-between your daily brushing, you should also be thinking about the foods you eat and drink. Highly acidic foods and beverages can eat away at the enamel on your teeth, so it’s important that you always follow such foods with a thorough brushing and rinse to ensure these particles don’t have the chance to sit on your teeth throughout the day and eat away at your smile. Additionally, think about your diet as a whole. A balanced diet is key to providing your teeth with the nutrients they need to stay bright, white, and healthy.
